Qualities of the Will

The qualities should be understood and evoked in the right proportion and mode as required by the situation. Some qualities are closely related to each other and others are opposite. A fully developed will knows how to use these differing qualities alternately or to achieve a balance between them by following a wise middle path.

  1. Energy—Dynamic Power—Intensity: Without sufficient energy, the will may lack the necessary force to overcome obstacles or achieve its goals. Intensity, or the degree of focus and determination brought to an act of will, can further amplify the power of the will.
  2. Mastery—Control—Discipline: Effectively and efficiently using the will to accomplish one’s goals, by directing it towards a specific purpose or task, while maintaining focus and consistency in the use of the will over a prolonged period of time.
  3. Concentration—One Pointedness— Attention— Focus: Directing one’s attention towards a specific task or goal and maintaining a clear and specific objective in mind while using the will.
  4. Determination—Decisiveness—Resoluteness— Promptness: Being committed to achieving a goal or objective and making quick and confident decisions, while maintaining one’s commitment, even in the face of adversity.
  5. Persistence—Endurance—Patience: Maintaining one’s efforts towards a goal over a prolonged period of time, and maintain a calm and level-headed attitude.
  6. Initiative—Courage—Daring: Acting and initiating new projects or tasks, including taking risks and face difficult or dangerous situations with the willingness to take bold or unconventional actions in pursuit of a goal.
  7. Organization—Integration—Synthesis: Structuring and plan the execution of an act of will by harmonizing different aspects or elements of the willed act and bringing them together in a cohesive and effective whole.
