Assagioli, Roberto (1967). Psychosomatic Medicine and Bio-Synthesis [Talk transcript]. Retrieved April 21, 2008, from Synthesis Center web site: http://www.synthesiscenter.org/articles/0121.pdf

Based on a lecture given before the Plenary Session of the International Psychosomatic Week, Rome, September 1967. It provides an introduction to psychosynthesis which Assagioli explains is properly named bio-psychosynthesis as it includes the body, not just the mind / psyche. Assagioli suggests that, from a patient’s point of view, not only the will is required but also a “fundamental will to be cured.” If the will is deficient or overwhelmed by a “counter-will” the doctor must be aware of this and attempt “to arouse or reinforce the will to be cured.” Without this “every therapeutic endeavor remains ineffective.” Assagioli suggests that “emotions and feelings of any … origin produce physical reactions … [and] … are the cause of psychosomatic disturbances.”

Details an instrument known as a ‘myergesthesiometer’ designed by Elmer Gates to measure the mind’s power to discriminate differences in the feeling of the muscular energy which accompany slight differences in the dynamic energy required to move the lever or string. The aim of the machine is to assist in increasing the power to will muscular volitions with slighter energy differences and to increase powers of discrimination between energy differences.

Third in the Avatar Mini-Course series, the Basic Will Course, details the Avatar (Harry Palmer) teachings relating to the functioning of the will. This course refers to will as “a broad term referring to the motivating force behind an activity.” (Volition). It details that the will can evolve though several realms described as instinctual, emotional, moral, self-determined, and transcendental. The aim of Avatar training is defined as becoming a source being. This is someone “who has recovered control of his or her will.” Self-sabotaging or conflicting behaviours and habits are described as “autopilot” and are said to be in the lower realms of will (instinctive, emotional, moral). Five exercises are included to assist in growth of the will: Awakening the Will; Disciplining the Will; Taking Control; Conquering Worry; and Willful Control.
